Re: Southern juice
when we moved to the SI, we crossed the straight on a new yrs eve, then headed for kiaks for a feed. we searched around for campgrounds but they were all booked up so we went back to manga??(near rail tracks) and set up camp for the night....cooked a feed on the bbq i had strapped on the back of vehicle, took the cats for a walk(had to use surf leashes on the moggies) and tucked the kids into their makeshift bivouacs...ie, a warehouse tarp tied to the side of vehicle.
new yrs day was magic..no surf, but when i woke the kids had buggered off for a wander and i peeked over the long grass to see a pod of dolphins playing. the sun was beating down and the mountains looked awesome with the morning light on them...never forget that day...just magic.

Re: Southern juice
Magic indeed. Those moments burn into your brain with such potency that you can recall them as vividly as they just happened decades later. What year did you move down seeka?
I shall look forward to NY's dawn on the Kaiks peninsula. And maybe a NY's wave at Kahutara. Or maybe paddling in warm rock-pools with my kids... Or maybe diving for something to eat... Ooh, the dream is colourful, and I'm looking forward to it unfolding...

Re: Southern juice
Great story seeka. Although personally, seeing someone walking around with cats attached to surf leggies almost beats the dolphins.
Hope ya score it DB! Kaiks rarely lets me down....great surf and a super place. I met a guy out one day who was planning on setting up a trailer in the puhi puhi valley, a few ks before Mangas. Its just beautiful in there.

Re: Southern juice
haha...yeah ds, come to think of it, it would have looked weird.,actually the cats did well, we had been on the road for about a month and they were couped up in a dog cage thing.
vivid is right db..it was 4 yrs ago...so 2004/2005.,
i suffered 20 yrs ear bashing of 'we should be living in the SI" from wife...should have listened to her all those yrs ago.

Re: Southern juice
the whole trip was pretty epic actually...
left muriwai just before xmas...visited the outlaws in taupo for a few days, went into the bush for a week, somewhere between napier and taupo..kawekas??, dunno but the road in and out sucked, but the rafting made up for it. ...back to taupo ..family day trip up ruapehu to play in the snow..next day laying on the beach in Gissy for a week...down to welly for the night and gatecrashed a mates place, cross ferry nw yrs eve, sleep on beach at kiaks for newyrs, then discovered kakanui and stayed for a few days and had my first SI surf solo(brrrrr!)..then onto dunners and then the catlins...and finally into southland to try and find a home and jobs
glad i got it all on film...good times.

Re: Southern juice
so seeka,
how did you settle on settling where you are now?
you were a month in the car?
Did you just drive around looking for the right spot?

Re: Southern juice
i have a safari 7 seater phoam, so just enough room for. 1 wife,3kids, two cats 2 surfboards, 3 snowboards, supplies for a month and a bbq tied on the back to the bike rack...oh and ofcourse a whole lot of xmas presents!
no, we had already made up our minds... we had sold a business about 4 months prior. straight away we took the kids outta school, packed the truck and went for a south island roady for a month.
i had never been to SI before but i knew if i went i wouldn't want to leave, i guess thats why i stayed north for so long...dragging out the inevitable
..ended up in southland and loved it...so we raced back to muriwai valley to pack all our turd up and put it on a container. the guy said 'where shall i drop it?" and we gave him an addy of wifes relly in southland...he goes'no home?'...'ahhh, nup!'..he thought we were nuts!..in fact, everyone thought we were nuts lol.

i got one Monster on saturday
triple overhead got held up in the lip by the offshore then a 100mtr hell ride kick out and try paddling back out ....20min later i gave up the paddle and called it a day utterly exausted
2 nice waves on sunday morning before the easterly junked it

Re: Southern juice
nice pic
man I love that place...
I did a couple of day trips there last
year when I thought it would be on
Got it just before or just after swell
So good fun, but not epic
Hard getting jokers around here to go for the
drive when there are waves locally
Mind you, I kinda in that camp at the moment
with no time.....
friday seems so far away at the moment
